How to make the transition from a Virtual Assistant to an Online Business Manager

24 Jan

Many virtual assistants and other service based professionals ask me, “How did you make the transition from an internet marketing virtual assistant to an online business manager?”

My answer is because I wanted to.  As a virtual assistant, my goal was to go from doing menial tasks for a client to growing into larger roles with them. I dug it when a client gave me a complete overview of what needed to be done and trusted that I could make it happen.

But there was a dark side to this, too. I began to work longer and longer hours because I was getting paid a basic virtual assistant rate (read under-paid! ;) to do more and more for each of my clients.  If I brought up raising my monthly retainer with my client, they’d stated they weren’t ready for an online business manager. But they sure appreciated all my expert help and would really love it if we could just continue on ‘as is’ and talk about it later.

I started to get worn out! I had to find a way to do less, but make more.

What was it that I could change in myself that would help these clients and potential clients see me as more than just a VA?

There were two essential changes I needed to make:

  • Change my mindset from a support person who could lead to a leader who could also support
  • Stop accepting clients that weren’t ready for an Online Business Manager. Period.

I began looking for a course on business management online.  That is how I first learned about Tina Forsyth and her Online Business Manager certification and training.

The first thing I did was buy her book: Becoming an Online Business Manager Playing a Bigger Game with your Clients (and Yourself). I did this because even though I knew I wanted to have a higher position than just a virtual assistant, I still wasn’t quite sure what that role was, if I was capable of it, and most importantly who and where were the business owners who needed this kind of help?

The book sang to me. I was at the breaking point & an Online Business Manager in disguise that Tina describes as sure signs I have what it takes to be an OFFICIAL online business manager.

So that is exactly what I did. I signed up for her certification training and I’ve accomplished the two changes I needed to make in order to BE an Online Business Manager. Woo who!
